Sixteen years ago, the land under the heavens was divided into five—the Gusu Lan Clan, the Yunmeng Jiang Clan, the Qinghe Nie Clan, the Qishan Wen Clan, and the Lanling Jin Clan ruled the land together. The Wen clan was the largest, and the other four clans each suffered beneath them.
Of the youths of the numerous clans, the son of the Jiang clan’s old friends, Wei Wuxian, had a cheerful disposition. He recognised Lan Wangji, the Gusu Lan Clan disciple renowned for his righteousness, as the one who knew him, which was reciprocated by Lan Wangji as well. By chance, the two of them discovered a secret the Lan clan had always guarded, and continued the work bequeathed to them by an ancestor, ridding the people of hidden trouble.
To much surprise, however, the hidden hand behind everything was the head of the Wen clan, Wen Ruohan. The many clans could not bear the ignominy, and joined forces to war with the Wen clan. Yet, after the complete destruction of the Wen clan, Wei Wuxian did not hesitate to oppose the many clans so as to protect the innocents of the Wen clan. He was eventually manipulated into causing a disaster by an evildoer, harming his shijie Jiang Yanli by accident, with himself nowhere to be found.
Sixteen years later, the long-vanished Wei Wuxian appears in Mo Manor, chancing upon his old friend Lan Wangji. The bizarre murders in Mo Manor are complicated and confusing. Chasing after the truth, they reveal it bit by bit, and Jin Guangyao, remaining hidden in the shadows, finds it increasingly harder to stay concealed. Eventually, Jin Guangyao dies, and Lan Wangji undertakes the task of assisting the land. Wei Wuxian does not forget his original heart, and travels freely and confidently throughout the world at last.
