乙丑歲赴試并州，道逢捕雁者云：「今旦獲一雁，殺之矣。其脫網者悲鳴不能去，竟自投於地而死。」予因買得之，葬之汾水之上，壘石為識，號曰「雁丘」。同行者多為賦詩，予亦有《雁丘詞》。舊所作無宮商，今改定之。
In the fifth year of Emperor Zhangzong of Jin’s Taihe reign$^1$, I went to Bingzhou$^2$ to take an examination. On the road there, I met a trapper of wild geese who said: “At dawn today I caught a wild goose and killed it then. The one that slipped my net, sorrowing and keening, couldn’t bring itself to leave, and instead hurled itself at the earth and died.” Thus I bought them from him and buried them on the banks of the Fen River, piling stones into a cairn and entitling it “the wild geese’s grave$^3$.” Those who were journeying together with me then composed many poems for it; I too have a “Lyric of the wild geese’s grave.” The old work I composed did not conform to syllabic regulation; it has now been revised and amended.
問世間，
If I might ask the mortal world:
情是何物？
What is that which is known as love?
直教生死相許。
For it has driven them to follow each other in life and death.
天南地北雙飛客，
From south of the skies to north of the earth they roamed, paired wing to wing$^4$ in flight;
老翅幾回寒暑？
How many winters and summers had their ageing wings seen?
歡樂趣，離別苦，
Such joy and delight they harboured, yet it made parting ache with bitterness;
就中更有癡兒女。
Herein they eclipse the sons and daughters of men in the madness of love$^5$.
君應有語：
Like enough, you wish to say:
渺萬里層雲，
Across the vastness of clouds upon clouds spanning ten thousand miles,
千山暮雪，
Over a thousand mountains enveloped by sunsets and snows,
只影向誰去？
